The average person grows hair at the rate 1/2 inch per month and has 100,000 strands of hair on their head. The best way to grow long, thick hair quickly is to increase your blood circulation, which will stimulate your hair follicles and help your hair to grow at the fastest speed possible for you. Scalp massages, inversion exercises and brushing your hair will all increase the speed of growth. The more hair you grow, the thicker the appearance will be.
Use an inversion table or gravity boots. Hanging upside down increases blood flow to the scalp to stimulate hair growth. Gravity will pull the blood down.
Hang over the side of your bed or couch several times a day, as advised by licensed naturopathic physician Dr. Nicole Sundene to increase circulation.
Do yoga poses like downward facing dog, forward fold, headstands, handstands, and peacock to put your body in an inverted or partially inverted position. Yoga Sun Salutations include these poses so most classes and DVDs will work, or you can learn them from an instructor and do them at home. Forward fold is the easiest of these poses to do. Start by standing up straight with your legs and feet together. Reach your arms over your head and bend forward at the waist as you reach for your toes. Breathe in and out through your nose and relax your neck allowing the blood to flow to your head.
Brush your hair from the nape of your neck down, every morning. Flip your head over. Brush your hair 50 times, once with a brush and once with your hand, alternating brush and hand to smooth out static, as recommended by Dr. George Michael, a long-hair guru, in an article called "A Visit with Dr. George Michael."
Wash your hair every other day and give yourself a scalp massage with your fingertips, recommends Dr. Sundene. Use a hair thickening shampoo and conditioner like Pantene Pro-V Full & Thick Shampoo and Conditioner. Goodhousekeeping Magazine rated Pantene Pro-V as the best overall hair thickening shampoo and conditioner out of 12 products it tested. They are inexpensive too at only $4 per bottle, as of 2009. Nexxus Shampoo and Sublime Volume Luscious Bodifying Conditioner, at around $14 and $15 each, came in second in the test, but was said to be the most thickening.
Tip
Dr. Michael says that blunt hair cuts are not good for hair growth. He suggests having your hair tapered like a half-circle at the end for hair growth.
