Most people feel self conscious about having unsightly scars and spots on their body. In time, some scars and spots will fade, but others are not so easy to get rid of. Before you pick up your phone to make an appointment with a laser surgeon, you might want to try the much more affordable approach of using cocoa butter.

Pick a good-quality cocoa butter. If a label on a bottle of lotion reads "cocoa butter," it may be great for your skin, but it may not always be the best option for fading spots. Look for 100 percent cocoa butter in the form of a lotion or cocoa butter stick. This is the most concentrated option and yields the best results.

Wash and exfoliate your skin. Before you apply cocoa butter to your dark spots, take a shower and exfoliate gently with your wash cloth. Do not scrub hard, as this can cause damage to the skin. Cleanse your skin with a mild soap, and wash in gentle circles. Be sure to rinse well, and eliminate any film that your soap may leave behind.

Apply the cocoa butter directly to the spots. If you use other lotions, apply the cocoa butter first. Give it time to soak into the skin. Then, apply your other lotion. Moisture is your skin's best friend when it comes to repairing itself. You cannot go wrong with applying pure cocoa butter and layering it with your favorite lotion.

Stick with it. This has to be done daily, or every time you shower. After awhile, you should begin to notice a gradual fading of your spots.

Warning

Stop the use of cocoa butter if your skin becomes itchy or red after using it.
