Hard bumps beneath the skin, especially when they appear on the face, can be embarrassing and difficult to conceal. There are a variety of causes responsible for the formation of these bumps. Some of these causes can even be dangerous if left untreated. Therefore, it is important for the sufferer to understand what causes hard facial lumps and the ways they can be remedied.
Hard bumps beneath the skin can be accompanied by a variety of symptoms, including swelling, stinging, burning, redness and pain. These bumps can appear blister-like and feel hot to the touch. Pus and oil can also collect inside these hard bumps. They can appear as a single bump on the face or group together to cover larger areas of the face and body. In extreme cases, these bumps may also accompany breathing or swallowing difficulties.
Causes
Hard bumps on the face can be caused by the condition angioedema. This is a type of allergic reaction that causes deep welts to form beneath the skin, typically by the lips and eyes. Certain allergens, such as foods and medications, can trigger the reaction. Cysts and nodules, both types of acne formations, can also cause hard painful bumps to develop beneath the skin. Bug bites, such as those caused by bees or spiders, can also result in facial bumps.
Treatments
Wash your face with a gentle cleanser and warm water at least two times per day. Hold a wet washrag or ice pack to the bumps for a couple of minutes to help reduce inflammation and redness. Ibuprofen or acetaminophen can also help relieve inflammation and pain. An antihistamine can help treat both bug bite and angioedema symptoms. For deep nodules and cysts, a dermatologist can prescribe a medication such as isotretinoin.

Prevention
To prevent the formation of hard bumps under the facial skin, it is important for you to understand what triggers cause the attacks. Keep a diary to pinpoint specific substances or food ingredients that seem to trigger an attack. To prevent nodules and cysts, avoid heavy, creamy facial products and cosmetics that can irritate the skin and block the pores. Apply over-the-counter acne treatments daily to prevent new acne formations from cropping up.
Warnings
In some severe cases, the appearance of hard bumps on the skin of the face can be the sign of a more dangerous allergic reaction called anaphylactic shock. If facial bumps are accompanied by breathing complications, dizziness, loss of consciousness or a drop in blood pressure, seek medical attention immediately. To prevent death, an injection of epinephrine may be required.
